THE PRICELESS GIFT OF FRIENDSHIP

ree

SCRIPTURE: “And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda; And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth” (Luke 1:39-40).

After receiving astonishing news that she had found favor with God and would “conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus,” Mary needed to share with someone, but who could she trust? She didn’t dare broadcast her news to just anyone, fearing she'd become an outcast. And what about Joseph? Did he know? So many questions. Mary needed someone by her side now more than ever. Through Luke, the writer, we see Mary’s desperation as he describes her hurried journey. I picture Mary frantically running to Zacharias’ house as fast as possible. In that instant, only seeing Elisabeth, her cousin, mattered; the sole person to help with her feelings and offer support.

Mary and Elisabeth probably needed each other. Pregnancy on its own calls for a supportive friend, let alone carrying a child in later years, and even more so, being chosen as Jesus’ mother.

Who is the friend you lean on during life’s ups and downs? A non-judgmental listener who won’t give unsolicited advice? From time to time, we all need a friend like that. Elisabeth and Mary were blessed to have each other.

Expressing love and appreciation to friends is so much fun at Christmas. Friendship is an invaluable gift. When we look at the friendship between Mary and Elisabeth, we see that a loyal friend will…

Be present when you need them the most.

I’m humbled as I think about the people God has placed in my life who have been with me through thick and thin. One of life’s treasures is having someone who can relate even when your words fail.

Make your spirit soar.

As soon as Mary greeted Elisabeth, the babe in her womb leaped for joy (Luke 1:43). Do you have a friend like that? Just being in their presence stirs your soul. Their positive, upbeat personality ministers to you even on your bad days. Praise the LORD for those with a servant’s heart who generously bless others with the gift of themselves.

Celebrate with you.

Isn’t it amazing to have a friend who truly rejoices in your happiness? Being happy for another person’s achievements isn’t always easy, particularly if they’ve succeeded where you haven’t. The Bible teaches us to “Share the happiness of those who are happy, the sorrow of those who are sad.” (Romans 12:15 PHILLIPS). I am blessed to have family and friends who embody this scripture. For which I’m truly thankful!

Inspire you spiritually.

“And Mary abode with her (Elisabeth) about three months and returned to her home.” Oh, what a treasure to have someone speak a blessing into your life, encouraging you to keep the faith and wait on the Lord to fulfill His promises.

God knows the value of a friend. Today would be a great time to express thanks for all the precious people God has placed in your life, “for such a time as this.”
